Our first Research Report is now published. Coal Collusion and CommunitiesIt explains how it seems that the planning system is allowing more opencast applications to be successful and suggests what MOPG have to do in order to counteract this situation.
 
 
The seccond report from Steve Learey is now availableUK Opencast / surface mined coal:  It`s role in providinig UK energy security explores how coal in the UK is sourced given the changes in modern production methods.  The relationship to be gained between the expected number of mines (approx 180) required between 2007 and 2025 based on furture estimates and where these mines are likely to be placed throughout the country - Important reading.
 
 
The third report from Steve Learey is now available.  UK Coal - An Alternative Report, reviews the recent history of UK Coal plc’s mining operations and details the overall estimated accumulated losses it has accrued in this area of its activities between 2000 and 2008. Attention then switches to a critical assessment of UK Coal’s representation of its land bank being mainly ‘brownfield’ land. Lastly, after presenting three case studies that show UK Coal’s attempts to develop its land often meets serious and sometimes successful resistance from local communities the report reaches a number of conclusions.
